Climate and Geography
Virginia, the first of the thirteen English Colonies in the New World, is one of the Southern Colonies. Colonists experienced very hot and humid summers, and mild winters. The fertile soil and plentiful rain made Virginia a great place for farming. There was lots of bays where ports could be made for trade. In the western part of the colony, the mountains and heavy woods made it hard to make big farms, so they were small, self-sufficient farms.
